The same job ADS-B does for manned aircraft: a unique ID, aircraft location and altitude, speed when available, and the pilot location. Repeated while the aircraft is flying.

Who it applies to
Most outdoor drones in the U.S., especially above a small weight threshold and many commercial flights. Limited exceptions exist.
What it means for a site
You see the aircraft and the operator. You keep a record. You will not see aircraft that are not broadcasting.
